Cycling and air quality: forecast timing, route variation, and limits
A city forecast can help compare departure periods for cycling, but it cannot calculate a rider’s route-integrated exposure. Route, traffic proximity, tunnels, terrain, duration, and model resolution remain explicit limitations.

Use the forecast for timing, not route simulation
AirAgora evaluates a selected city coordinate with the named OpenWeather 1–5 scale and complete two-hour windows. This supports a consistent comparison between broad periods. It does not sample every segment of a route or infer the conditions inside a bike lane, tunnel, or building.
Long rides can cross multiple model cells, administrative areas, and timezones. A single city result is most useful as a starting context rather than a door-to-door estimate.
Near-road and terrain differences are below the broad grid
OpenWeather provides modeled fields with documented resolution across a broad provider grid. Roadside gradients, junctions, tunnels, valleys, coastlines, and moving plumes can occur at much smaller scales.
AirAgora never converts a city coordinate into a claim about traffic emissions on a route. Its static pages use GeoNames facts and avoid unsupported local pollution-source narratives.
Duration makes the worst hour relevant
A ride may begin in one category and finish in another. The AirAgora score uses 70 percent of the mean normalized severity and 30 percent of the worst hour across each complete window. Missing hours remove the candidate.
If windows are effectively tied, the earlier one wins for stability. If the winner barely improves on the median, the interface says conditions are broadly similar instead of promoting a precise departure minute.
Activity context stays separate from environmental order
Selecting cycling raises the prominence of exertion-related caution but does not modify the ranked windows. The same forecast therefore has one explainable environmental order rather than a hidden formula per profile.
The product cannot assess an individual rider’s health, equipment, pace, route, or duration. Public activity guides and professional advice remain the appropriate sources for personal decisions.
Severe events and official information
During wildfire smoke, dust, or industrial incidents, local notices and monitor networks can provide more immediate route-specific context. A model can lag, smooth a plume, or use a different valid time.
When every practical window is elevated, AirAgora uses least-polluted language and never labels the top rank safe. The caution and official-guidance direction remain public, regardless of plan.
