Commute air quality: compare departure windows without route overclaiming

AirAgora can compare city forecast windows around a commute. It does not calculate door-to-door exposure and cannot know ventilation, route, traffic proximity, underground segments, or conditions inside a vehicle.

What a city-level departure comparison means

The tool scores complete two-hour windows at the selected city coordinate using the fixed AirAgora rule. It can indicate that one broad period has lower modeled AQI severity than another. That is useful for flexible departure planning when other obligations allow.

It is not a route engine. A journey can cross grid cells, city boundaries, tunnels, stations, platforms, indoor spaces, and microenvironments. Those differences are not collapsed into a fake personal exposure total.

Mode and route remain outside the model

Walking, cycling, driving, buses, rail, and underground travel create different surroundings and durations. AirAgora currently uses the activity choice only for caution wording; it does not pretend to model cabin filtration, platform ventilation, or near-road gradients.

The transparent boundary keeps the recommendation consistent and explainable. Future route features would require additional sources, licensing, validation, and privacy review.

Compare the complete time span

A departure time alone can be misleading if conditions change during the journey. The two-hour planning window includes a mean and a worst-hour component. Missing values invalidate the candidate rather than being interpreted as clean.

A shorter commute can use the window as context. A longer commute may need adjacent hours or the Premium 72-hour planner, but the same environmental score remains in force.

Keep scale, timestamp, and provenance visible

AirAgora displays the official OpenWeather 1–5 scale and does not relabel it as European, U.S., or local regulatory AQI. The modeled source and update time remain visible.

A provider or cache error never becomes a simulated commute. A bounded stale result keeps the original timestamp; otherwise the tool reports unavailable.

When commute flexibility is not the main question

Official warnings, employer instructions, transport disruptions, emergency notices, and individual health guidance can matter more than a relative forecast window. AirAgora cannot see those constraints.

The result should support, not dominate, a decision. Severe-condition caution is public, and Premium adds saved automation rather than exclusive safety information.

  • Cover the journey duration, not just departure.
  • Consider changes in route and transport mode.
  • Check the named AQI and source timestamp.
  • Do not treat a city grid as cabin or platform data.
  • Follow official incident and transport guidance.

Does AirAgora calculate door-to-door commute exposure?

No. It compares a modeled city coordinate and does not combine route segments, vehicle interiors, platforms, or ventilation.

Can I compare morning and evening?

Yes, when both periods have complete forecast data. The same deterministic window rule applies.

Does driving versus cycling change the ranked window?

No. Activity affects caution wording but does not silently rerank the environmental forecast.

Why can my platform or road feel different?

A broad forecast grid cannot resolve every tunnel, platform, junction, vehicle cabin, or near-road microenvironment.

What if provider data are old?

A bounded stale result is labeled with its original timestamp. Outside that retention, AirAgora reports unavailable.

Are commute alerts Premium-only?

Free accounts can use a basic saved alert within limits. Premium adds up to five locations, richer thresholds, directions, quiet hours, and longer planning.
